Wood effect vinyl wrap
Wood effect vinyl wrap is a vinyl sheet with printed wood grain and adhesive on the back: you cut it to size and smooth it onto doors, drawers, desks and tables. There are rolls up to 80 cm wide, from light beige to black.
For other finishes, see the furniture vinyl wrap or the plain coloured vinyl wrap.
Frequently asked questions
Can wood effect vinyl wrap be used outdoors?
No, the designs in this collection are made for furniture and indoor surfaces. Outside the home, sun, rain, ice and temperature changes fade the print and weaken the adhesive, which starts to peel from the edges. For front doors, shutters or garden furniture you need vinyls made specifically for outdoor use or a suitable wood varnish. Indoors, use it on dry furniture and walls, away from heat sources.
Is vinyl or wood effect paint better?
With paint, you spread a light base and then a darker coat that is worked with a comb or a graining roller: it takes sanding, some practice and drying times between coats. Vinyl has the grain already printed, goes on in a few hours and can be removed, so it also works in a rented home. That said, on carvings and curved shapes paint covers better.
Are there oak, walnut or cherry effect adhesive vinyls?
Not under those names: the designs are listed by colour, from light beige to dark brown, plus black and white and black. If you need to match the vinyl to a piece of furniture you already have, compare the photos of the design with a photo of the furniture taken in daylight. Remember that the screen can alter colours a little, especially warm tones.
Can wood effect vinyl go on lacquered or chipboard furniture?
Yes, if the surface is smooth, clean and has no flaking parts. It grips well on lacquer and melamine; just degrease them carefully before putting it on. The cut edges of chipboard, however, are porous: apply a bonding primer first and let it dry. On antique solid wood furniture it is better to avoid it, because when you remove it you can damage the finish.
Can wood effect vinyl wrap be used on a table?
Yes, some designs are made precisely for tables and desks. Use whole strips along the full length of the top, with the join following a grain line, where it shows least, and fold the edges under the tabletop so they do not lift with use. Remember that it is still a thin vinyl: put hot pans on a trivet and always use a chopping board, because heat and knives leave marks.
