Wooden wall panels

Nearly all the wooden wall panels in this collection are mosaics: small squares, triangles, retro style and 3D relief, generally 30 × 30 cm. They are fitted side by side, like tiles.

If the look of wood is enough for you, see the wood effect panels; for other materials there are the decorative wall panels.

Decorative wooden panels: the mosaic models

All the models on this page are decorative wooden wall panels for indoor use, and almost all are mosaics: many small pieces gathered in a single panel. There is a mosaic of small squares, one of triangles, a retro-style panel and several 3D mosaics, with the design in relief.

The most common size is 30 × 30 cm; one model also exists in 60 × 30 cm, handy for covering more surface with fewer joins. The panel with a diamond cut is a case apart: it is not a mosaic and is sold in a pack of 2 pieces of 30 × 30 cm.

How to choose wood panelling for interior walls

Before the design, decide how much wall you want to cover, where the light comes from and how much time you want to spend on fitting. Then compare decorative wooden panels for interior walls on these points.

  • Size: the 30 × 30 cm one is easier to handle on walls with sockets, switches and corners to trim; the 60 × 30 cm one is quicker to fit on large, clear surfaces.
  • Design: small squares and triangles form a regular geometric pattern; 3D mosaics create shadows and depth, especially with raking light.
  • Style: the retro model has a vintage air and looks good with reclaimed or dark wood furniture.
  • Pack: check on the product page how many pieces it contains; the diamond model, for example, is sold as a pair.

3D decorative wooden panels, slats and battens: the differences

On the 3D mosaics the surface is not flat: each piece casts a small shadow and the wall changes appearance through the day. On a whole wall the effect is marked; on a strip of one or two metres it is subtle. If you are interested in relief but not necessarily wood, see the 3D wall panels.

Slats and battens are something else: long, narrow strips, generally mounted vertically. There are no wooden slat wall panels here, and no fluted models. You will find wooden slat panels among the acoustic wooden panels with slats; if you prefer to build a batten wall yourself, there are the wooden mouldings and profiles for painting.

Wooden panels for interior use: which rooms

In the living room the most natural place is the sofa wall or the TV unit wall. In the entrance hall, a wooden panel makes a narrow wall less anonymous. In the study or office, the triangles and 3D mosaics look good on the wall behind the desk, the one seen in video calls.

In the bedroom, decorative wooden relief panels go well on the headboard wall; for a more classic design, with frames and panels, consider the wall mouldings. Near the shower and the hob, wood suffers from water, steam and splashes: there the PVC panels for bathroom and kitchen are more practical. If you also want to decorate the ceiling, there are the decorative ceiling panels.

How to glue wooden panels on the wall

Mosaic panels are generally fixed with adhesive, without visible screws. The wall must be dry, smooth and firm: on crumbling plaster or peeling paint, the adhesive will not grip.

  • Leave the panels out of the box for a day or two in the room where you will fit them, so the wood adapts to the temperature and humidity.
  • Clean the wall of dust and grease and let it dry.
  • Try out the layout on the floor, then draw the line of the first row with a spirit level and a pencil.
  • Apply a mounting adhesive suitable for wood on the back, in dabs or beads, and press the panel for a few seconds.
  • Trim the edge pieces with a fine-toothed saw and run sandpaper over the cut.

Cleaning and caring for wood wall panels

Dust settles between the pieces and in the hollows of the relief. From time to time run a feather duster or a soft brush over them; if needed, use a barely damp microfibre cloth, well wrung out. Avoid plenty of water, abrasive sponges, solvents and alcohol, which can stain the wood.

Over the years the wood changes tone slightly, especially if the sun hits it many hours a day. It is a good idea to order one or two extra panels: if a piece gets damaged, you already have the spare.

Wooden panels for interior walls: price and quantity

To know how many pieces you need, work out the surface you want to cover (width by height) and divide it by that of one panel. One of 30 × 30 cm covers 0.09 m², so you need about 11 per square metre; one of 60 × 30 cm covers 0.18 m², about 6 per square metre. For a strip 2 m wide and 1.2 m high (2.4 m²) you need 27 panels of 30 × 30 cm; with 10% extra for cuts and waste you reach 30 pieces.

In this collection the price depends on the model, the size and the pack. To compare two options, work out the price per square metre: divide the price by the surface covered by the pieces included. Delivery is tracked, the maximum delivery time for your country is shown on each product page before you buy, and you can return your order within 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main types of wooden panels?

For walls, the most common types are slats, battens to assemble, plain panels and mosaics, flat or in relief. They change the final effect and the fitting work: slats are generally mounted vertically, while mosaics are put together like tiles. In this collection there are mosaics of squares, triangles and retro style, 3D mosaics and a model with a diamond cut.

Which panel stops noise?

No decorative panel stops the noise coming from neighbours or the street: for that you need work on the wall, such as a lining. Panels that absorb sound work inside the room and reduce echo, but they do not stop noise coming in. The wooden mosaics on this page are chosen for their looks: if your problem is reverberation, see the acoustic section of the shop.

What are the cheapest wall coverings for an interior wall?

The cheapest is paint; next come wallpaper and self-adhesive PVC coverings. Wood costs more per square metre, but you do not have to cover the whole room: a strip next to the sofa or the headboard wall is enough to change the atmosphere. Here the most affordable model is the diamond cut one, in a pack of 2 pieces of 30 × 30 cm.

Can wooden panels be put in the bathroom or the kitchen?

Better avoid them near the shower, the bath, the sink and the hob. Water, steam and grease splashes make wood swell and stain, and over time the adhesive can give way. In a well-ventilated bathroom you can use them on a wall away from splashes; for wet areas choose a plastic material such as PVC, which is cleaned with a damp cloth.

At what height are wooden panels fitted on the wall?

There is no fixed rule. At full height the effect is stronger and the room seems more enclosed. At half height, normally between 100 and 120 cm from the floor, you get a lighter strip and leave the top part free for pictures and shelves. In the bedroom you can stop a little above the headboard of the bed.
