Blackout acoustic curtains, winter curtains and double-layer curtains
In this collection you will find two types of acoustic curtains. The blackout ones darken the bedroom and the living room: there is the velvet curtain, the linen effect one, the beige one with fixed pleats, the one with an inner lining, the black double-thickness cotton one and the eyelet one that is sold as a single panel. Among the winter ones there are double-layer models, double-thickness models or ones with cotton padding. The cotton curtain with eyelets is both winter and blackout.
We call them acoustic because the fabric, especially if it is thick, multi-layered and with many pleats, holds back part of the sound that bounces off the floor, the windows and smooth walls. The effect shows in the echo and the boominess of voices inside the room. For outside noise a different argument applies, which you will find below.
Professional acoustic curtains or home curtains: what changes
The professional acoustic curtains seen in offices and meeting rooms are made with technical fabrics, often sewn to measure and accompanied by an absorption coefficient measured in a laboratory. They are needed when the reverberation of a large space has to be calculated beforehand.
The curtains on this page are home curtains. They have no declared absorption value and we do not write an invented one for you. They do what any fabric curtain does: they bring a soft surface into a room full of hard ones. They are a simple first step, which you can complete, if necessary, with the slatted wood acoustic panels on one wall.
How to choose an acoustic curtain
A good acoustic curtain for the home is not the one that promises most on the label, but the one that puts the most fabric in front of the window. When you compare models, look at these four points.
- Fabric: velvet and thick cotton make heavy acoustic curtains that hold back more sound than a thin, sheer fabric.
- Layers: double layer, inner lining or cotton padding add thickness and weight to the curtain.
- Height: a curtain that reaches almost to the floor covers more surface. The collection has models 213 cm and 310 cm tall, and one that goes up to 250 cm.
- Width: if the fabric stays slightly gathered even when the curtain is closed, the pleats increase the absorbing surface.
Acoustic curtains for the bedroom, living room, children’s room and home office
In the bedroom, blackout acoustic curtains do two jobs: they keep out the morning light and dampen the boominess of a room with few fabrics. In the living room, with large windows and hard floors, two long panels reduce the echo of voices and of the television. Some models are also suitable for the kitchen or for the balcony door.
With an acoustic curtain in the home office, the difference is most noticeable on video calls, because the voice bounces less off the window glass. If the echo persists, add a little acoustic foam on the wall facing the desk. For the children’s room there is a blue curtain with a space design, to go with the children’s wall stickers of stars and planets.
How to hang and wash them
Curtains with eyelets go onto the rod: remove the end cap, slide the eyelets on and put it back. For the other models, including the fixed-pleat one, check on the product page whether you need hooks, rings or a track. Position also counts: with a rod mounted above the frame and wider than the window by 15-20 cm on each side, the fabric also covers the wall around it. If you want the curtain open during the day without people seeing in from outside, there is the self-adhesive window film for glass and windows.
For washing, follow the label: the children’s room curtain can go in the washing machine, whereas for velvet, linings and quilted curtains check the instructions on the product page first. Between washes, run the vacuum brush on low power over the curtain to remove dust from the folds.
How much they cost and how many curtains you need
The price depends on the fabric, the size and the layers: most of the winter curtains are the cheapest, and the blackout ones in velvet, with an inner lining or with fixed pleats are the most expensive. On the product page, check whether the price is for one panel or a pair.
To know how many you need, measure the rod, not the window. On a narrow window one panel is usually enough, while a wide window or a balcony door needs two, one per side. If you want the pleats even when the curtain is closed, the total width of the panels should be about 1.5-2 times that of the rod. Take the height from the rod to the floor, minus 1-2 cm so the fabric does not drag.
Absorbing sound or stopping it: curtains and outside noise
An acoustic material reduces echo and reverberation inside the room, because it absorbs part of the sound instead of reflecting it off walls, glass and floor. A material that stops sound, on the other hand, prevents it from passing from one space to another, and for that you need mass and airtightness: double glazing or laminated glass, windows with seals, well-closed roller shutter boxes. A curtain is light and porous, so it only works on the first front.
That is why, if you are looking for acoustic curtains for outside noise, it helps to know what to expect: traffic, building work and neighbours will still be heard, because the noise comes in through glass and walls. Against boominess, on the other hand, a curtain really does help. If the ceiling is high, add the acoustic ceiling panels.
