Self-adhesive acoustic foam: size and material

The pack contains one roll of 50 × 100 cm and 2 cm thick, covering 0.5 m². The foam is black and has three layers: the bumped surface like an egg box, the foam body and the adhesive back, protected by kraft paper that is removed before fitting. To cover 1 m² you need 2 rolls; for an area of 1 × 1.5 m, you need 3. It arrives rolled up: before fitting, leave it unrolled for a few hours on a flat surface, so that it lies flat more easily and the cut is more precise.

How to apply the self-adhesive foam

The photo shows the bumped surface and the kraft paper covering the adhesive. Fitting has four steps: clean and dry the surface, measure and cut the foam, remove the protective paper and press firmly over the whole surface. To cut, use a long-blade craft knife or sturdy scissors, following a ruler. On car bodywork and trim, degrease the surface first and let it dry. On walls, remember that a strong adhesive can take paint off when removed: if you want to move it later, stick the foam to a thin board and fix that board to the wall.

Acoustic foam in the car: doors, boot and cabin

The photo shows the foam lining the cabin of a car. Among the positions the supplier lists are also the doors, boot, tailgate, roof, wheel arches and underbody. It is normally fitted behind the interior panels, after they are removed, so the foam ends up hidden. Measure the available space first: with 2 cm thickness, some panels may not close properly. The supplier also mentions the bonnet, but gives no data on how the foam handles heat, so as a precaution avoid areas near the engine and exhaust. No measured values are given for this roll.

At home: absorbs echo, does not stop noise

On interior walls, this type of bumped foam is normally used to reduce echo in rooms with many hard surfaces and little furniture, such as a hobby room, a home office or a corner for video calls. At 0.5 m² per roll, you usually need several, spread across the walls where the voice bounces most. An important point: a sound-absorbing material works on the acoustics inside the room, but it does not stop noise from neighbours or the street. Other materials and building work are needed for outside noise.

How many rolls do I need?

Each roll covers 0.5 m². Measure the area you want to cover and divide by 0.5: for 1.5 m² you need 3 rolls, for 2 m² you need 4. Add a margin for trimming, especially on curved surfaces or areas with many openings, such as doors and wheel arches, where part of the material has to be discarded.

Will it stop the neighbours' noise?

No. Egg box foam works inside the room, on sound reflections, but it does not stop noise passing through walls, floors and windows. Stopping that needs heavy materials and building work such as masonry or plasterboard systems. For this roll, the supplier also gives no measured absorption values.

Can it be cut to fit car shapes?

Yes, cut it before removing the protective paper. For curved shapes, such as wheel arches or door panels, make a card template, transfer it to the back with a marker and cut with a long-blade craft knife or sturdy scissors. Leave a few millimetres spare and trim after a dry test fit.

Can it be fitted in the engine bay?

The supplier mentions the bonnet among possible positions, but gives no data on how the foam handles heat or fire. As a precaution, we advise not fitting it near the engine, manifold or exhaust, and using it in the cabin, doors and boot.
