Acoustic foam panel: size and material

Each item is one square panel of 30 × 30 cm, made of black polyurethane foam. The thickness depends on the variant: 5 cm or 2.5 cm, as the dimensions in the photos show. The surface is made of rounded bumps, like an egg box. One panel covers 0.09 m²: to cover 1 m² you need 12, and for 2 m² you need 23. The supplier does not state the weight or the density of the foam.

Acoustic foam 5 cm: more depth, more pronounced relief

The 5 cm variant has the same 30 × 30 cm base and the same black colour. The dimensions in the photo show 30 cm square and 5 cm thick. The bumps are taller and the panel sticks out further from the wall: choose it if you have space and want a more pronounced surface. The supplier gives no measured absorption data, so we cannot tell you whether the 5 cm panel absorbs more than the 2.5 cm one. If you fit several panels, use the same thickness for all of them so the relief stays even.

Acoustic foam 2.5 cm: less depth

The 2.5 cm variant has the same 30 × 30 cm base, and the photo dimensions show 2.5 cm thick. The panel sticks out less from the wall: it is useful where space is tight, for example in a hallway or a narrow wall. It is still black, and the surface is always rounded bumps. To cut a panel, use a sharp craft knife with a ruler, with light passes, and change the blade as soon as the cut starts to fray.

How to fit and where to use acoustic foam

The supplier states an adhesive on the back, of the peel-and-stick type, but the back is not visible in the photos: check it when you open the pack. If there is adhesive, clean and dry the wall, draw a level line, remove the film and press the panel firmly over its whole surface. If there is none, choose a fixing suitable for foam. A strong adhesive can take some paint off when removed, so test a hidden corner first.

An acoustic panel is used in rooms with many hard surfaces, such as floors, glass and smooth walls: a bedroom, a work room or a living room. An important point: a sound-absorbing panel is designed to reduce sound reflections inside the room, but it does not stop noise from neighbours or the street. Other materials and building work are needed for that. The supplier gives no measured values, so we make no promise of a specific result.

Will it stop the neighbours' noise?

No. It is an acoustic panel designed to reduce echo inside the room: it does not stop noise coming in from outside. Reducing noise through a wall needs other materials and building work. The supplier gives no measured values, so we do not state numerical results.

What is the difference between 2.5 cm and 5 cm?
