Peel and stick wall panels
Self-adhesive wall panels are the peel and stick type: you remove the film and press them onto the clean wall, with no glue. There are 3D PVC squares of 30 × 30 cm, foam panels of 35 × 35 cm, rolls 40 or 50 cm wide and padded panels.
They are part of the decorative wall panels; for the raised effect, also see the 3D wall panels.
Frequently asked questions
What material are peel and stick panels made of?
It depends on the model. The 3D squares are PVC, a plastic material with the relief design already formed. The 35 × 35 cm panels and many rolls are foam, in some cases XPE, light and easy to cut. The padded ones have a soft layer covered with a leather effect or linen effect covering. On all of them the adhesive is already applied on the back, under a film that peels off.
Can peel and stick panels be put on damp walls?
No. On a damp wall the adhesive loses its grip and the panel tends to come off soon after. Also, the panel does not stop mould: it covers the stain, but the damp stays underneath and keeps causing damage. First find and deal with the cause, let the wall dry well, repair the plaster and paint, and then fit the panels.
Do foam panels protect against cold or noise?
No, they are decorative panels. Foam is soft to the touch, but it is not made to retain heat or to stop sound passing through: the neighbours' noise stays the same and the room does not get warmer. They are for giving the wall relief and colour. If the problem is echo in a room with little furniture, you need acoustic panels designed for that, which reduce reverberation but do not stop the noise coming from outside.
Can peel and stick panels be cut to size?
Yes. Foam is cut with scissors or a utility knife, PVC with a utility knife with a new blade resting on a metal ruler. Mark the measurement on the back, on the film, and cut before peeling it: this way the adhesive does not stick to the blade. Near sockets and switches it helps to prepare a paper template and copy it onto the panel.
Can peel and stick panels be stuck on the ceiling?
Only the models marked for this use, such as the 40 × 300 cm roll for walls and ceilings. The ceiling must be smooth, clean and dry, like a wall. Work as a pair: one person holds the open strip and the other peels the film and presses from the centre towards the edges. For the other models check the product page before ordering.
Do peel and stick panels damage the wall when removed?
It depends mainly on the paint underneath. On well-bonded washable paint usually only traces of glue remain, which come off with warm water and neutral soap. On old paint or paint that sheds dust, some colour may come off too, and then a touch-up will be needed. Before covering the whole wall, stick one piece in a hardly visible spot and try to peel it off after a few days.
