Stick on kitchen tiles: what is in this collection

Kitchen tile stickers are faux self-adhesive tiles for the kitchen, with the adhesive already on the back. The models are of four types:

  • 3D tiles: metro tile effect in sets of 5, PVC ones of 30 × 30 cm, green fish-scale ones of 30 × 30 cm, marble effect (also 23 × 23 cm), square vinyl ones in sets of 10 and a grey wood effect foam model, in vintage style;
  • mosaics: gold coloured sheets of 30 × 30 cm and a glass effect 3D mosaic;
  • stickers to apply over the tiles you already have, in sets of 10: vinyl or matt with an abstract design of 20 × 20 cm, frosted effect of 15 × 15 cm, black and white checked, matt blue and grey, and macaron-style gradients;
  • other splashback tiles: 25 × 25 cm in sets of 5 and two removable models, also described for the bathroom or the children’s room.

How to choose size, model and finish

Start with the size: 15 × 15, 20 × 20, 23 × 23, 25 × 25 or 30 × 30 cm. If your splashback has 20 × 20 cm tiles, choose stickers of the same size and apply one on each tile. Among the 20 × 20 cm tile stickers for the kitchen there are two sets of 10: one in vinyl and one matt with an abstract design. The 10 × 10 cm size does not appear among the stated sizes: the smallest is 15 × 15.

Then choose the type. The 3D self-adhesive tiles for the kitchen are fitted piece by piece. The sticker sets, on the other hand, are used as an adhesive film for kitchen tiles: you cover one at a time and they need smooth ceramic. For a matt finish there are the matt stickers and the frosted effect ones. If you are looking for white stick on tiles for the kitchen, there is the black and white checked set. For a wood effect across the whole wall there are wood effect wall panels.

How to cover old kitchen tiles without removing them

Self-adhesive tiles are fitted over the existing ceramic if it is smooth, sound and degreased: no demolition and no dust. Adhesive decorations for kitchen tiles, such as the checked or gradient sets, change the pattern of each tile and leave the grout lines visible; the larger sheets, such as the 30 × 30 cm mosaics, can cover them if they are shallow.

The typical areas are the strip between the worktop and the wall units and the wall behind the sink. Kitchen wall tile stickers can also be fitted on painted plaster, if the paint is smooth and firmly bonded; on rough walls or exposed stone the adhesive does not grip. On the splashback you can add a quote with the wall stickers. There are no rolls of self-adhesive tiles for the kitchen here: for a material that is cut to size, see the vinyl wrap for kitchen doors and worktops or the peel and stick wallpaper on a roll.

Do kitchen tile stickers withstand heat?

No. None of the models in this collection is described as able to withstand heat or flames: keep them away from flames and hot surfaces, because direct heat softens the adhesive and can warp the PVC, the vinyl and the foam.

Fit them on the rest of the splashback and leave the original ceramic right behind the hob, or protect that strip with a toughened glass or steel panel. When you cook, switch on the extractor hood: steam and hot grease weaken the adhesive.

How to fit peel and stick kitchen tiles

You need a tape measure, a level, a pencil, a craft knife with a new blade, a metal ruler and a clean cloth. The steps:

  • degrease the surface and let it dry: in the kitchen the film of grease cannot be seen, but it stops the adhesive from sticking;
  • draw a horizontal line with the level, and do not rely on the worktop;
  • peel off the protective film little by little and press from the centre to the edges to push out the air;
  • join the pieces following the pattern, so the joins show less;
  • for sockets and switches, turn off the power, remove the plate and cut out the hole before peeling off the film.

How to clean self-adhesive kitchen tiles

A soft cloth with warm water and a little washing-up liquid is enough. Wipe up oil and sauce splashes straight away, before they dry.

Avoid alcohol, solvents, bleach and metal scourers, which can damage the surface. On the 3D models and between the pieces of the mosaics use a soft brush.

How much kitchen tile stickers cost and how many you need

The price depends on the type, the format and the number of pieces in the set. To compare them, work out the cost per square metre: divide the price of the set by the area it covers. A kitchen covering made with self-adhesive tiles saves you the tiler and the removal of the old ones. For larger pieces see the PVC wall panels for kitchen walls; for a stone effect there are the 3D stone effect tiles.

A 30 × 30 cm piece covers 0.09 m², a 20 × 20 cm one 0.04 m². Multiply the width by the height of the area and add 10% for cuts. A strip of 2 m by 60 cm measures 1.2 m²: you need 15 pieces of 30 × 30 cm, or 33 stickers of 20 × 20 cm, that is, 4 sets of 10, extra pieces included. If, on the other hand, you cover the existing tiles one by one, count them and add a few spare pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What coverings are there for a masonry-built kitchen?

In a masonry-built kitchen the splashback is usually already tiled: there you can fit the self-adhesive tiles directly over the ceramic, if it is smooth and degreased. On rendered pillars and low walls you can also use the mosaics and the 3D models, as long as the paint is smooth and firmly bonded. Avoid exposed stone or raw brick, where the adhesive does not grip, and the strip next to the hob, where heat weakens it.

Do you need glue to fit stick on tiles in the kitchen?

No. The adhesive is already spread on the back and protected by a film: you peel it off and press the piece onto the wall. Tile cement, spread with a notched trowel in a layer a few millimetres thick, is for traditional ceramic tiles. Do not add glue or silicone under these pieces: they create uneven thicknesses, form bubbles and make them almost impossible to remove in future.

Can you fit stick on tiles on the kitchen floor?

The ones in this collection are intended for walls: the splashback, the wall behind the sink, a strip above the worktop. On the floor they have to withstand footsteps, dragged chairs and frequent mopping, so you need models made expressly for floors. In that case, fit them on a smooth, clean, dry surface, starting from the centre of the room and pressing each piece firmly, especially at the edges.

Does kitchen steam make self-adhesive tiles peel off?

It can if steam and grease often reach the edges. Switch on the extractor hood when you cook, do not boil pans right next to the wall and wipe off splashes straight away. How well they grip depends mostly on the fitting: a degreased, dry wall, with the pieces pressed firmly from the centre to the edges. If a corner lifts, warm it a little with a hairdryer and press it for a few seconds.

How do you remove self-adhesive tiles without damaging the wall?

Peel slowly from a corner, pulling the piece almost parallel to the wall; a hairdryer on low heat softens the adhesive. On ceramic there is normally only residue, which comes off with warm water and mild soap. Some colour may come off paint, so test in a corner first. Two models in the collection are described as removable, handy if you rent.
