Frequently asked questions
How do you cover an interior door?
The simplest way is to cover it with adhesive vinyl. You measure the door, cut a strip with a few centimetres of margin, smooth it on from top to bottom with the squeegee and trim the edges with the craft knife. You do not need paint or carpentry tools. On an 80 × 210 cm door, the 90 cm roll covers the full width with a single strip, that is, with no joins.
What options are there for covering a door?
There are three main routes: paint it, replace the panel or the whole door, or cover it with adhesive vinyl. Paint needs sanding and several coats; replacing it is the heaviest job. You put the vinyl on yourself in a few hours and take it off whenever you want a change. It gives the cleanest result on flat doors; on deep relief it is advisable to cover only the flat parts.
Can you put adhesive vinyl on a wooden door?
Yes, if the wood is smooth, dry and varnished or lacquered. On raw or porous wood the adhesive grips poorly: sand, apply a coat of primer and let it dry well before putting the vinyl on. Remove wax and dirt with a degreaser. On wooden doors with raised panels you can cover the flat parts and leave the panel frames visible, or cover them with the adhesive borders.
How do you change the panel of a security door?
The inner panel is taken off and replaced by a new one made to measure, usually with the help of a technician or the door distributor. If yours is sound and flat, you can avoid replacing it and cover it with the vinyl, working with the craft knife around the handle, the lock and the peephole. On a grooved panel, with deep grooves, the vinyl does not stick well and replacement remains the cleaner route.
Can you cover the door frame too?
Yes, with the 5 m long wood effect adhesive borders. Choose the width to suit the architrave: the 8 cm strip suits narrow ones, the 20 cm border the wider ones; cut in half, it gives you two 10 cm bands. At the top corners cut at 45 degrees for a clean join, and choose a tone close to that of the door so that door and frame look like a single piece.
