Transparent plastic vinyl, 45 cm wide, that sticks to the wall by static electricity: it has no adhesive layer. Each unit ordered is one roll, of the length you choose: 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 m. It goes on tiles and other smooth surfaces, for example the kitchen splashback, and is cut to the size you need. You can choose between the transparent version and the satin transparent version.

Electrostatic vinyl: sizes and material

Each unit ordered is one roll, 45 cm wide. The lengths are five: 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 m, which cover 0.45 m², 0.9 m², 1.35 m², 2.25 m² and 4.5 m². The material is plastic: the supplier's text states polypropylene (PP), while the specifications also list “Paper”. We follow the text, which is more precise and consistent with the photos, but the exact composition is not confirmed. The vinyl has no adhesive: it holds by electrostatic attraction, and the inner face, the one that carries the charge, rests against the wall. The supplier does not state the thickness: if you need an exact measurement, ask us before ordering.

How to fit the transparent vinyl

The supplier lists these steps. Clean the dust from the wall, open the vinyl and check the size, then lay it on the wall. Smooth it with a spatula or a cloth to push out the air bubbles, and trim the excess. Near a switch, trim the vinyl flush against the wall, leaving no gaps where air can get in. After fitting, leave it undisturbed for two or three days: according to the supplier, the longer it stays, the more it sticks. An honest tip: on a dirty, damp or rough surface the grip is weaker, so test a small piece first.

Transparent or satin transparent

There are two versions, distinguished by name and by the photos. In the photo of the Transparent version, the lifted edge is clean: you see through the vinyl, and a sharp reflection of a window appears on the wall on the right. In the photo of the Satin transparent version, the same edge looks milky, more opaque than clear, and the wall is even, without sharp reflections. In both photos the rolled-up vinyl looks whitish: the difference shows at the lifted edge. If you want to see the wall through the vinyl without haze, choose the Transparent version; if you prefer a more hazy look, choose the Satin transparent version.

Where to use the electrostatic vinyl

The supplier recommends it for kitchen tiles, walls, cupboards and furniture, and the images also show painted walls, smooth walls, a bathroom and a balcony. The supplier does not advise it on damp walls, walls with holes or relief, on embossed wallpaper or on fabric sofas; it also advises against surfaces covered with silicone tablecloths. Avoid direct contact with flames: behind a gas hob the supplier asks for a sufficient distance and cites 5-7 cm. We make no promise about how it behaves with heat.

Do I need glue or double-sided tape?

No: the vinyl has no adhesive layer and holds by electrostatic attraction. The inner face rests against a clean, smooth wall. According to the supplier, after fitting it should be left undisturbed for two or three days: the longer it stays, the more it sticks. On a dirty or rough surface the grip is weaker.

Does it come off without leaving marks?

The supplier presents it as easy to remove without leaving marks, but we cannot guarantee this: it depends on the surface and how long it has been in place. On a delicate wall, test a hidden spot before fitting it everywhere. To remove it, lift a corner and pull slowly, without jerking.

Can it be used behind gas hobs?

The supplier advises avoiding direct contact with flames and leaving sufficient distance between the burner and the vinyl, citing 5-7 cm. It does not state heat resistance, so we cannot tell you it will withstand it. If in doubt, keep away from the area closest to the hobs.

Which surfaces should it not be used on?

The supplier advises against embossed wallpaper, uneven walls and fabric sofas. Its images also indicate damp walls, walls with holes or relief as unsuitable. Lastly, it advises against surfaces covered with silicone tablecloths, such as tables, worktops and kitchen surfaces.

How much vinyl do I need for a splashback?

The roll is 45 cm wide, so a wall 90 cm high needs two strips placed side by side. If the wall is 1.2 m wide, you need two strips of 1.2 m, that is 2.4 m of vinyl: the 3 m roll leaves about 60 cm for cutting and for trimming around sockets and switches. If the length you calculate is close to that of the roll, choose the next length up.
