Window film

Adhesive window film keeps the inside from being seen through windows, sliding doors and shower screens, or decorates them, without changing the glass. There are frosted, mirror-effect, matt black, coloured and decorative models, both adhesive and static with no glue: the static ones can be peeled off and repositioned whenever you like.

For furniture doors there is vinyl wrap for furniture, and for the doors of your home vinyl wrap for interior doors.

Window film: the types you will find

Window film is designed for the glass in your home: windows, doors, sliding doors and shower screens. The models differ by effect, fixing (adhesive or static) and format, in a roll or in sheets.

  • satin and frosted-effect films: white, plain or striped, including one adhesive satin vinyl film;
  • mirror-effect films: silver and one-way, adhesive or static;
  • matt black films: adhesive or static, also in a pack of 2 rolls;
  • clear and coloured films: a clear adhesive window film in several thicknesses, 7 coloured sheets of 20 × 30 cm and a coloured roll; for furniture there is the plain coloured adhesive vinyl;
  • decorative films: rainbow effect (also in 3D), with magnolia or lotus flowers, with a black grid; for walls there are the flower and plant wall stickers.

Static or adhesive window film: how to choose

Non-adhesive window film, known as static film, has no glue: it clings to smooth, wet glass, and you can peel it off and stick it on again, which is handy if you rent. All the decorative films are static, as are the shower screen one, the sliding door one, two frosted-effect ones, one black one and one mirror-effect one.

Adhesive film stays firmly in place even on glass that is touched often, but once it is stuck it cannot be moved and, when you take it off, it can leave traces of glue. The adhesive ones are the satin vinyl film, two black ones, two mirror-effect ones, the coloured ones and the clear one. A roll of adhesive window film is cut to size with a craft knife.

Privacy window film: what can be seen from outside

If you are looking for window film for privacy, the simplest option is adhesive frosted window film: from outside you see at most blurred silhouettes, by day and by night, and the room stays bright, as with frosted glass. Matt film in black, on the other hand, removes the view completely but darkens the room: it suits a storeroom, an office or a pane that faces a courtyard.

Mirror-effect films are one-way: by day, with more light outside than inside, passers-by see a silvery reflection and you see the outside. At night, with the light on at home, the effect is reversed: in the bedroom and the bathroom you also need curtains or blinds. Microperforated film, the kind used on shop windows, is not available here.

Window film for shower screens and bathroom glass

For the shower screen there is a matt white static film, in addition to the frosted-effect one for sliding doors and the bathroom. Whether you choose a static or an adhesive film for the shower glass, put it on the outer face of the pane, the one that stays dry: water does not get under the edges and you clean the inside of the screen as before.

A film for the shower changes the look of the screen, but it does not replace seals or silicone: if water leaks out, the problem is there. Run a squeegee over the glass after each shower and check the edges from time to time. For the walls around the washbasin there are bathroom tile stickers.

Window film for windows: inside and outside panes

On windows the film goes on the inside face of the glass, even if you are looking for adhesive film for outside windows: there it is protected from rain and dust. On glass doors and display cabinets, measure only the glass, without the frame; if they are in the kitchen, for solid fronts there is vinyl wrap for the kitchen.

If you are looking for decorative adhesive film for glass, note that here the decorative ones are all static. There are three rainbow-effect models, one in 3D and one with lotus flowers; the magnolias and the black grid decorate the glass and block the view. Coloured window film, on the other hand, is transparent: it colours the light and lets you see outside. In a children’s room it goes well with the wall stickers for children.

How to apply window film to glass

You need a spray bottle with water and a drop of washing-up liquid, a soft squeegee, a craft knife with a new blade and a lint-free cloth. Work in the shade. With adhesive films, peel off the backing paper little by little as you lay the film down.

  • wash the glass and scrape off any paint or silicone residue with a blade;
  • cut the film 2 cm larger than the glass on each side;
  • spray plenty of water on the glass and lay the film down, starting from the top;
  • with the squeegee, push water and air bubbles from the centre to the edges;
  • trim along the frame and wait a few days before washing it.

Cleaning, lifespan and cost of window film

To clean it, warm water, mild soap and a microfibre cloth are enough; avoid alcohol, ammonia, solvents and abrasive sponges. How long it lasts depends on the sun, humidity and care. Once peeled off, store static films rolled up on their backing paper.

The price changes with the type (frosted, decorative, matt black or mirror effect), the format and the fixing. To compare them, work out the cost per square metre: divide the price by the area covered by the roll or sheet. For the quantity, measure each pane and add 2 cm on each side: for a pane of 60 × 120 cm, order at least 64 × 124 cm. Delivery is tracked and the maximum delivery time for your country is shown on each product page before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How long does window film last?

There is no fixed lifespan: it depends on how much sun the glass gets, on humidity and on how you clean it. On the inside face of a window, washed with water and mild soap, film stays in good condition for a long time; in direct sun all day or next to the jet of the shower it ages sooner. Static films can be peeled off and stuck on again, even in another home.

How do you make glass look frosted?

The simplest way is frosted-effect film: you cut it to size, apply it with water and the glass becomes matt but bright, with the look of frosted glass. If you choose a static one, you can remove it whenever you like and the glass becomes clear again. Sandblasting or new frosted glass give a similar look, but they are permanent and need a glazier.

What can you see through window privacy film?

It depends on the type. With a frosted-effect film, from inside you see light and blurred silhouettes, just like someone outside. With a mirror-effect film, by day you see the outside, only slightly darker, while from outside there is a reflection; at night, with the light on at home, the opposite happens. Matt black films let you see through from neither side.

Does shower screen film go on the inside or the outside?

Better on the outside, on the face of the pane that stays dry. That way splashes do not get under the edges, limescale and soap do not build up on the film and, on the inside, you run the squeegee over the glass as usual. Static shower screen film can be peeled off and stuck on again: if you are not happy with the first fitting, you can repeat it.

Does window film keep the heat out?

None of these films is sold as thermal film. If you are looking for thermal adhesive window film, designed to keep heat and cold in, you will not find it here: the frosted-effect and decorative films are for privacy and the look of the glass, the mirror-effect films for privacy by day. The matt black films darken the room, but they are not sold as protection against sun or heat.

Where can I buy adhesive window film?

You can order it from this page: choose the model and check the format and the fixing, adhesive or static, on the product page. Before ordering, measure each pane, so you order the right amount from the start.
